Our History

Vitiligo Support International began in the year 2000, with a group of patients on the public Internet Usenet groups. Randy Salter, a Usenet participant for many years, found success in treating his own vitiligo, but realized the public newsgroups were no place for people with vitiligo to interact and learn. He decided that a website was needed that would provide a central location for people to find information and share support in an organized forum free from junk postings.

In May 2000, with the help of several programmer friends and associates, "," was registered as a grassroots website featuring volunteer staff, message boards, chats, an interactive doctor search and a comprehensive FAQ page. With frequent news, message board updates and an understanding and caring atmosphere, Vitiligo Support soon became the most popular destination on the Web for those affected by vitiligo.

In 2003, Randy met Jackie Gardner, an active website member who had experience in public relations. With Jackie's guidance and encouragement, the organization began working in the real world, advocating patient needs in Washington, D.C., fostering awareness, participating in medical conferences, promoting clinical trials, and encouraging research to better understand vitiligo and development of new treatments.

In January 2004, became Vitiligo Support International, a nonprofit public benefit organization, incorporated in California and operating under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. A Board of Directors and Medical Advisory Panel were formed, and the organization began using the web address

With more than 50,000 members registered on the website, Vitiligo Support International is continuing its mission to improve the lives of those with vitiligo.
